Whatever lore humans have studied on "heaven" and "hell" are completely wrong.
Or mostly wrong. Heaven is no better than hell, and angels no better than demons, yet somewhere along the lines some things got lost in translation, and now there are churches dedicated to praying and worshiping the very creatures that suckered humanity into a pact that is...a bit shit, honestly. Human souls are delicious, so they promised to help humans maybe sometimes in exchange for keeping their appetite for souls sated. All of those "miracles" in the face of horrible worldwide disasters? Just the angels doing the bare minimum.
Then there are the demons. The demons actually need to feed on human souls to keep hell going, and hell is necessary to cage the damned. One of the biggest reasons for angels and demons squabbling is over souls. The angels don't need them! They need to stop taking so many! Maybe hell should be the ones to have this deal instead of those greedy bastards!
And that's where Gildo comes in. In order to keep literally everything that can go wrong in this scenario from actually going wrong, he offers hell souls himself. Like the world's most fucked up grocery list, the demons supply Gildo with the ability to have visions that take him to the most..."filling" souls. These souls in particular are like having hundreds of souls in one, which makes things slightly easier on Gildo to keep the demons fed. The reason for this is because these souls have been reincarnated since the beginning of time. Mostly, they're shitty people, being reborn for whatever reason and continuing to become shitty. But sometimes...they're not. Sometimes they're the quiet nurse who works countless hours day and night while taking care of their sick mother. Sometimes they're the sweet kindergarten teacher who loves their job and all the kids they work with. Unfortunately, the demons decide they want them, and if Gildo doesn't get them...well, earth's fucked.
